Product Description and Principal Function(s)

VISO is a set of handlebar grips and gloves innovatively designed for cyclists to promote safer cycling trips in dark environments. With 8 Ultra bright LED on the handle grips; widest point of the bike, this allows the cyclist to be a lot more visible to other road users. It ergonomically designed to prevent hand and wrist related cycling injuries by providing a perfect handgrip. Wireless connection within VISO controls the switch between standard cycling lights to indicating lights automatically by a traditional hand signal. VISO fuses technology, form and function for safe and enjoyable night cycling experience.

Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award?

With risen bicycle usage in the past few years due to Australian’s health consciousness and environmental awareness, cycling safety has became a main concern for both cyclists or drivers. On the other hand, many potential cyclists are reluctance to bicycle commute due to the high risk of the return trip at night time – where visibility of the cyclist is inadequate. VISO Bicycle Lighting System is designed to satisfy their needs. It has been innovatively designed to increase safety of cycling trips in dark environment – encourages bicycle commuting day or night. It cleverly uses 30000 mcd bi-colour LED technology allowing maximum brightness from minimum space and weight, which are usually key considerations for cyclists. Visibility level is largely increased because VISO uses 2 point lighting system rather than traditional single light. With RSSI wireless connection between VISO gloves and VISO grips, indicating lights can automatically switched on by a traditional cycling hand signal. Surface mounting and flexible technology allows glove to be luminated too to extend the obviousness of indicating.

The traditional hand wave signal is ingrained into the practice of cycling. Since most cyclists, are already accustomed to waving their hands to indicate a turn or changing of lanes, it will be difficult to require the rider to perform a different action they aren't used to. By the use of wireless directional antennas, the indicating lights can be activated automatically when the generic turning action is performed by the cyclist. The antenna works by pointing 60degrees outwards, the location of where a hand should be when a cyclist signals. The indicating lights will only activate when the receptor on the glove is signaled by the antenna within the area of reception. This will therefore allow the cyclist to perform an array of actions synonymous with cycling, such as grabbing items from a bag, drinking water, scratching, etc, without actually activating the indicating light. Furthermore this will not restrict the users’ movement.

VISO not only provide a functional benefit for the cyclist, VISO grip is also ergonomically designed to minimise cycling related wrist and hand injuries. VISO grip is shaped to encourage a steady hand grip supporting the heel of the palm, hence reduces pressure on to the wrist and major nerves. Cycling related hand injuries such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Handlebar Palsy can be largely minimise using VISO grip.

Visually VISO is designed to be appealing and captures a very strong cycling language. Organically carved grip set not only integrate to a perfect hand grip at the same time demonstrates the aerodynamic profiles often bicycle product design refers to. Colour scheme has been chosen to symbolize the context of the product itself; automatically user will understand the context of VISO without it being in-used. Physically, a highlighted bump in the middle of the grip matches with the lighting elements on the glove, emphasizing the relationship between the grip and glove.

With no competitive product on the market, VISO introduces a new era of cycling safety and experiencing.
