Product Description and Principal Function(s)

During a raging bushfire, fire fighters are usually stretched thin due to the expanse of the fire scene. Sentinel is a hose clamp device, which allows it to be used as a fixed fire suppression point at a fire scene. The fire fighters just have to attach them to the nearest water point. Depending on the situation, a number of Sentinels can be deployed across the fire scene and left un-manned, thus reducing manpower. This allows fire fighters to fight fires efficiently and focus on more important tasks like rescuing people.

Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award?

Sentinel is a fire-fighting unit that does not operate individually but as part of a system. A system of Sentinel would consist of 3-5 (or more) individual units covering a single fire scene. Since they can be left unmanned, fewer fire fighters are needed to control a fire scene, thus saving precious manpower during a bushfire.

The Sentinel is designed like a tripod, which allows the Sentinel unit to be placed on any uneven terrain. Although the Sentinel operates as a fixed fire suppression point, fire fighters are able to release the hose should the situation requires it. Therefore this makes Sentinel a very versatile equipment.

Sentinel is designed to be clearly identifiable with the equipment fire fighters use daily. A standard fire hose can be used and the tripod can be easily set up by anyone who has used a camera tripod before. Sentinel wont be affected by the advent of new hose designs since it is a hose clamp device therefore as long as new hoses still come in the standard sizes, they can be fitted onto Sentinel. With a small form factor, the Sentinel units are portable and easy to store.

The plastic components are made of Phenylene-oxide coated with Ceram Polymerik that is a high heat resistant material. The tripod components are made of high carbon steel for strength.
