Product Description and Principal Function(s)

The Pulse Bicycle Safety Helmet has revolutionised the capabilities of the bicycle safety helmet. Where current helmets act only as a passive piece of protective equipment, the potential for a helmet to act as an interactive accident preventative safety device has been delivered. Cyclists can now listening to their favourite music, answer their mobile phone and record cycling data without compromising their safety on the road. Cyclists can also enhance their presence on the road with inbuilt lighting and reflectors, while a new internal ventilation system has been developed allowing cyclists to personalise their own helmet’s colour and trim.

Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award?

The Pulse Bicycle Safety Helmet sets a new benchmark for bicycle safety helmet design. With the Australian Safety Standard for pedal cycle helmets in mind (AS/NZ 2063), the Pulse Bicycle Safety Helmet challenges both the functionality and appearance of bicycle safety helmets while keeping user safety and ergonomics at the forefront of its design.

The potential to incorporate so much more into a helmet to actively enhance rider safety, streamline rider tasks, provide an optimal level of stimulation to keep the rider alert and employ the right materials and manufacturing processes to produce the outcome has also been addressed in this design.

Rider activities and tasks such as listening to music, engaging a mobile phone or recording and retrieving cycling data have now been streamlined into the Pulse Bicycle Safety Helmet by the addition of the Ear Drop feature. Located only on the non-road side ear so that the oncoming traffic can still be heard, the Ear Drop allows riders to perform their desired riding related activities more easily and quickly, minimising the risk of a fatality.

Rider safety has not been compromised in this helmet design, where built-in lighting (LED’s) and reflective surface materials have been employed to enhance rider presence on the road. Greater weather protection is also gained by the employment of a new internal ventilation system where the outer surface is closed and air tunnels are established to cool the rider. This also allows riders to personalise the outer surface colour and trim.

Current industry manufacturing technologies and trends have been addressed and explored, where new materials and technologies have been employed to provide the most appropriate solution that addresses both the safety of users and the quality and durability of the product, particularly in crash situations.

The Pulse Bicycle Safety Helmet addresses the fundamental activities and habits of cyclists on and off the road, which is the key to product and marketplace success.
