University Product Description and Principal Function(s) Emotion is a task chair, designed to be used in the office or study context. The principle functions embody adjustable seating, status display and a high extent of secondary usage. The need to constantly move whilst working has been previously identified as necessary, however, the display of status and secondary usage boosts confidence and encourages the user to interact with the chair as a universal object rather than just a chair. Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award? Emotion deserves to be awarded as it symbolises the re-invention of adjustable seating. Up until this point, chairs were only adjusted in terms of how they may be sat upon. Emotion allows the user to transform a chair into a lounge, bench, shelf or any form the user may desire.Emotion is the first task chair to allow for secondary uses via universal adjustment. Secondary uses incorporate any action where a chair is being used for a purpose for which it is not designed. Research revealed actions ranging from slouching seated positions to using the chair as a storage place or even a racing vessel. The design process was centred upon incorporating all of these actions as well as allowing the user to explore and discover the capabilities of the form. The form follows clean lines and incorporates a frame with 5 hinge points, allowing for many different adjustment positions. Adjustment is achieved by the user squeezing marked areas on the body and releasing a clutch mechanism. As the clutch is released, the corresponding hinges are gradually released, allowing the user to adjust Emotion into various forms which they find useful. In the standard upright position, Emotion is unlike any other task chair. The one-piece body is finished with self-skinning polyurethane, giving the impression it is solid. Yet upon being touched, it is soft and cushions the body. Alternative finishes are leather and suede. The base and armrests are made from cast aluminium and are offered in polished and anodised finishes. The aluminium provides a pleasing contrast to the body and creates a clean separation between soft and hard surfaces. The internal structure of the chair incorporates a titanium frame for strength and weight saving with a network of springs for inner support. The frame is connected by hinges with a stainless steel casing. Attached to the frame are the clutches, consisting of an ABS casing with metal internal components. Covering the frame are two layers of polyurethane foam to provide support, cushioning and comfort. Emotion is to be offered in three sizes; small, medium and large. This is to incorporate a full range of users from the 1% female to the 99% male. The dimensions of the model are an exact representation of the ergonomic measurements required to provide the correct height, depth, width and lumbar support for sitting for extended periods of time. The 6-legged base provides extra stability whilst the chair is tilted into various positions. The armrests also lock into place, allowing them to act as supports in some reclining positions. The castors are oversized and are more commonly used in hospital applications. They allow the chair to roll easily on many surfaces and provide a lifetime of strength and durability. Finally, the materials and processes used have been selected with consideration to the environment. Minimal waste will be generated during the manufacture process and excess and waste materials can be recycled. |
