Product Description and Principal Function(s)

Corrugated cardboard is a product which has minimal exposure outside of the conventional “BOX”. Therefore this study aims to highlight the potential for corrugated cardboard, while raising its status as a structural material through the design and manufacture of high quality indoor seating.

The study attempts to alter current user perceptions through combining everyday disposable materials with simple manufacturing techniques to produce a product which is rich in character and high in value.

Central to the study is the importance of creating bonds between consumers and their possessions in order to achieve product longevity and sustainability.

Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award?

The purpose of the chair was to transform an everyday disposable material into a product of longevity which is rich in character and high in value. The chair is constructed from recycled corrugated cardboard and stainless steel threaded rods and bolts. The characteristics of the cardboard combined with the unique construction methods create a unique and intriguing design. The chair was designed using only curved lines to create a very organic natural form which is visually stimulating.

The chair is made up of three profiles cut from three different cardboard flute sizes. Each profile is threaded onto the rods in an alternating process to create the chairs structure. The alternating layers create open spaces between the layers which allows light and air to pass through the structure creating playful shadows, while posing questions of the chairs strength and integrity.

The chairs modular design includes a removable coffee table / footrest. Constructed using off-cuts from the chair to minimise waste the coffee table can be neatly stored away within the body of the chair. The construction methods of the chair also mean that variations can be constructed to suit any room or function. Simply by using longer rods and additional profiles the chairs width can be lengthened to transform the chair into a bench or arms can be added to create and arm chair. The modular design for disassembly enables the chair to be dismantled for storage or transportation.

Honest use of materials was a driving factor throughout the design. The cardboards fluting or end grain was left exposed to create an engaging texture for the user. Additionally the cardboard was stained black rather than painted as I didn’t want to mask or cover the texture and feeling of the cardboard. The remaining profiles were finished in clear varnish to enhance the cardboards natural colour and character. The finishing also protects the cardboard from scuff marks and staining from spills.

The cardboard profiles were cut on a flat bed plotter. This ensured that every profile was exactly the same and that the holes for the rods would line up correctly. This produced a very high quality fit and finish.

The chair places the user in a reclined position which reduces unwanted pressures on the body, while providing adequate support in the necessary areas. The ergonomics of the chair make it comfortable for a wide variety of people.

The recyclability of the cardboard enables the chair to be 100% recyclable.
