University Product Description and Principal Function(s) Electrolis is a zero-electricity consumption product that makes use of human-powered energy to clean both carpet and hard flooring. The concept of Electrolis is based on a natural science phenomenon of static electricity. As known, static electricity is generated by the contacts of two opposite materials under the triboelectric series. By using the kinetic energy of user's movements, it starts the imitated Van de Graaff static generator within the product and generate static charged to a metal plate at the underside of the product and thus, making it capable of attracting hair and particles on the ground.Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award? According to research, there is an increase of almost 47% in sales of vacuum cleaners from 1995 to 2006. a UK survey showed that from 1996 to 2006, vacuum cleaners ownership has an increment of 8.7%. With that, a conjectured calculation of energy use is nealy 2 terawatts per year. Though current environmental policy suggests on sharing appliances, many consumers still prefer to own their appliances. My proposal is to create a cleaning appliance that make use of human-powered energy. Electrolis is an entirely new concept of cleaning the carpet. It suits the lifestyle of of busy individuals and sustainable living. As it is fully mechanically powered, it omits the use of electricity for daily cleaning. Unlike conventional vacuum cleaners, Electrolis does not produce unbearable noises and it removes the the hazard of wires lying around. It makes it easier and sustainable to make it a daily simple task without having to set up electrical connection. Also, the reason why many companies had refused to engage in reinvention of vacuum cleaners is mainly because profits are sustained with the sales of dust bags. However the current condition of environment cannot afford to hold such self-centered intentions anymore. Electrolis proposed to save materials by not having a dust bag at all. All you need to do is to remove the charged plate from the housing and wipe it with wet cloth to release the charge and remove the debris, which makes it easily maintained. Joined with several snap fits and screws, it allows possible servicing to the product such as changing belts and parts of the mechanism. Although rising as a new concept, Electrolis does not compromise the way user interact with cleaning product like vacuum cleaner and it does not demand additional energy from the user. Taking the form of an upright vaccum cleaner, it adopts the same movements of operation and has weight that is comparable to existing cleaners. With adjustable handle and a 35 degrees rotating angle, it ergonomically fits into 95 percentile of both male and female users of maximum height of 1.85m. |
