University Product Description and Principal Function(s) Australia has some of the best weather in the world for Gliding, yet the public barely knows about the sport. The Portable Gliding Simulator changes that. It can be taken anywhere, and set up in minutes, allowing members of the public to experience the joy of flying first hand. Its large screen and full working cockpit entertains and educates the public and will help increase pilot numbers in years to come. Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award? The Portable Gliding Simulator is the only one in Australia, one of a very few in existence, and unique in its design. Most Simulators are not mobile, requiring their own facilities and taking up significant space. The few that can be moved are large, inflexible and impractical. Since none are commercially available, all are one-offs, and very expensive. This Simulator is different. It cuts down on weight and size, to give an easy to tow and easy to set up attraction. The inside surface of the roof is used as the projection screen, giving a large curved view stretching around the pilot. This also significantly cuts down on size, weight and expense. The sides fold down to reveal steps, and increase the floor area. Setup is simply a case of removing the roof, lowering the sides, and placing the roof upright on its fixing point in front of the aircraft. The aircraft itself behaves just like the real thing. With a full working instrument panel, cockpit, and head tracking, the pilot experiences total immersion. The simulation is good enough that it can also be used for training purposes. This significantly cuts down on wear and tear on what is usually a rough time for training aircraft. On the road, the trailer’s aerodynamic shape, small size and light weight make it simple to tow. At 450kg, it can be towed by practically any car with a tow ball. It is well balanced and simple to move around by hand once at its destination. With the current down turn in glider pilot numbers, the movement needs more than the traditional static displays to attract people. It needs young, enthusiastic people to put in their time and energy, and appreciate the joy that is flying. The Portable Gliding Simulator attracts the right people and gets them hooked, so they want to come back for more! |
