University Product Description and Principal Function(s) The Hydrop is a domestic steam mop which utilizes hydrogen fuel cell technology to power the device. Like every other steam mop, water is needed to produce steam. Filling the water tank can be a tedious task for its user, the Hydrop will create its own water supply as the byproduct of the combustion process. This also means that it would not require a cord of any sort and would make Hydrop the world’s first cordless steam mop as well as the first to produce its own water. Features such as these would promote Hydrop's usage on a regular basis. Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award? Innovation• The concept of the Hydrop is innovative since it incorporates the use of hydrogen fuel cell technology as means of powering the appliance, as well as making a cordless solution amongst its range of products • The reason for specifying hydrogen fuel cell as a power source was due to its capability of producing water as a byproduct of the combustion process. This way the water that is produced by the Hydrop is utilized to create steam which is the main factor of the design, as steam is the key ingredient needed during the usage of the product. Intelligence/ Cleverness of Design • The Hydrop is a new concept that improves current steam mops by making its own water (steam) without the need of filling its water tank manually. • Nor will it run out of its water supply because as long as there is a hydrogen fuel cell to power the product, running out of water is not an issue. Visual Impact/ Form • The organic form as well as the subtle colour theme used for the Hydrop suggest a pleasant feel towards the product and promotes usage. • The placement of the parts in the Hydrop are discrete yet eye catching such as the control dial is made obvious. Functionality • Details such as the hydrogen fuel cell was placed in a manner that makes it partially submerged inside the body, while the rest is visible. This was done because of functional reasons as well as adding a good aesthetic to the product as the fuel cell being Hydrop’s first-off feature • Its triangular base solves the problem of accessing tight corners when in use, while looking aesthetically pleasing due to the curves outlining the form of the design. Originality • The Hydrop is the world’s first steam mop to incorporate hydrogen fuel cell technology into the product making it more efficient and environmentally sustainable. Manufacture • Designed to be assembled with minimum fittings, utilizing snap fits throughout the product. • Appropriate materials have been assigned to specific parts that require high heat resistance as well as having high impact strength Human factors • All the handle grips on the Hydrop have been strategically placed to improve the overall user feel of the device as referred to the 99 percentile man and through means of full scale mock ups and form studies. • The product incorporates features such as a bi-metallic strip that switches the heating element off when it exceeds the maximum temperature to prevent overheating. Environmental sustainability • The need of the Hydrop was generated due to looking at demographic projections of 2016 stating that the number of lone person households would increase by 74%. • Keeping this in consideration these people would need to multi-task themselves to perform everyday household chores. The concept behind the Hydrop is to minimize the human input. • Due to the Hydrop’s water supply, it is a long lasting product as water is always produced whenever the Hydrop is powered on. • The use of hydrogen fuel cell makes the Hydrop emit no carbon emissions during the combustion process and does not damage the environment. It makes it a green product and environment safe. |
