How to Apply

To make an application to the Australian Design Award - James Dyson Award, follow the easy steps below:
1. Review the brief
2. Check your project's eligibility
3. Agree to conditions of entry
4. Preview application questions and submission requirements
5. Prepare your images
6. Make an online application

1. Review the brief

  • All entries for this Award must come recommended by the applicant's lecturer or supervisor. If you wish to submit an application to the Australian Design Award - James Dyson Award, please contact your lecturer or supervisor to discuss whether your project is appropriate for entry. Your qualification is based on project completion, design resolution, quality of presentation material and overall achievement.
  • Applicants may enter recent major projects that have been set by the individual or educational institution and reflect complete design excellence. Winning entries will be those that encompass all principles of design and offer significant benefits to the end user. All entries submitted for this award should demonstrate building, testing and using the concept.

    2. Check your project's eligibility

  • Only one entry per applicant is permitted.
  • All applicants must be individual tertiary students or recent graduates of an undergraduate design course at an Australian educational institution. The Australian International Design Awards and Dyson reserve the right to refuse entry if an applicant is from a non-Australian educational institution or is more than one year outside of course completion.
  • Group entries are not permitted.
  • All entries must include a well-built prototype or model of the concept. Of the four images submitted for application, at least one of the images must be of the prototype or model.

    3. Agree to conditions of entry

  • All entries must come recommended by the applicant's lecturer or supervisor. The Australian International Design Awards and Dyson reserve the right to refuse entries that are incomplete or poor in quality and presentation.
  • Prototypes or models of a particularly fragile nature will not be accepted. Should the prototype or model be too large to fit through a standard door width (0.8m), please contact the Australian International Design Awards to discuss alternative arrangements.
  • Should an entry be successful in proceeding to the Final Round Assessments, delivery of all submission material to and from the designated assessment site is the responsibility of the student and/or university. All unclaimed material will be retained by the Australian International Design Awards or Dyson for the promotion of design.
  • All submission material must be wrapped extremely well in bubble wrap, placed in a clearly labelled carton with a contents sheet on the outside of the box and surrounded with good quality packing foam. Poorly packaged material will not be accepted.
  • Projects might be transported by the Australian International Design Awards or Dyson to and from exhibitions and/or launches. The Australian International Design Awards and Dyson will do everything possible to ensure the security of submission material during assessment and exhibition. Please be aware that the Australian International Design Awards, its employees and agents accept no responsibility for any damage or loss caused to any product samples provided during transportation, handling or storage and that packaging, transportation and insurance of any such material is the responsibility of the applicant. Due to the highly fragile nature of prototypes/models, please be aware that damage or loss might occur. Insurance to cover project damage or loss should be considered if the value of the project is considerable.
  • The winners and finalists will agree to partake in any publicity and promotional activity surrounding the Award and future Awards. As part of their ambassador role, the winner will be required to partake in some activities recommended by the organisers while the exhibition is travelling internationally.
  • All entries should be available to the organisers for exhibition purposes. No third party should be allowed exclusivity over design rights until exhibitions and promotional activities are complete.
  • Finalists should make every attempt to be in Australia for the week of the Australian International Design Awards presentation night and exhibition, unless unforseen circumstances arise. In this case, please nominate a representative (parent, friend or guardian) to attend on your behalf.
  • By making an application to the Australian Design Award - James Dyson Award, you are agreeing to the abovementioned terms and conditions.
